A Sudden Thought About God, Idolatry, & Atheism

(3/15/2015)

COME TO THINK OF IT:

By nature, we don't want a God Who would tell us what to do and what not to do. So, it's either we'll just imagine a version of God Who's okay with everything that we do  - after all, He is forgiving; or, we'll just totally suppress the idea that God really exists - i.e., atheism. Whether it's the first option or the second, we try to make it the very rule of our lives to be hinged on that idea.

If you chose the first option, you will make up in your mind a version of God who will just say yes to all of your choices - a version of God who can't say no to you. In other words, you will be making a God whose actions and decisions revolves around your own desires.

On the other hand, if you chose the second option, you will just make up in your mind a world without a Creator and Sustainer - a world that just appeared out of nothing through natural causes (which, metaphysically speaking, doesn't make sense). It's a world where we humans decide what's right and what's wrong. Then, we will accuse those who still believe in God of being anti-science and ancient minded. In other words, we just want God to get out of our lives.

And if anything beyond our control happens, our first complaint will be, "If there really is a God, where is He now that we need Him?!"

Which made me ask: Is that really how selfish we are? So selfish, we don't want rules or anything that demands our obedience, that either we'd just rather imagine a version of God that just blesses but doesn't demand obedience or we'd just rather imagine a world without God? And if we chose the second option, the time that something beyond our control happens will be the time for us to look for God?

I don't know, but to be shamefacedly honest, that's what I saw in my own self
