Truth and Consequences
by Angela Lucius 2012
I lay here in darkness and think of your face,
Lost time now so distant, your sweet kiss I still taste.
Once we were young lovers with wishes and dreams,
Torn from each others arms with curses and screams.
Dragged away in confusion, threatened with lies.
Fear placed in our minds, tears branded our eyes.
Convinced it was wrong, that we weren't meant to be
Though we knew in our hearts, still no one could see.
Yet time after time, our life paths have since crossed.
And we feel it each time, that one hope, never lost.
And over and over we've buried the truth,
Dying to self and the passions of youth.
We moved on in silence, ignoring our dreams,
Exploring new paths, chasing wishes down streams.
Always searching for love in the arms of another,
To do what seemed right, the truth we would smother.
Our life's obligations always stepping in,
Denying love's flame like a dark dirty sin.
We blamed it on fate and how life is unfair.
Our love always forbidden, a curse we both share.
Our lives always entrusted to somebody else,
Except for one truth we hold secret to self.
Other love never blossoms or blooms very long.
Choked out by the secrets we whisper in poems.
Now we lie in our beds each night in the dark,
We weep silent tears from our sad longing hearts.
Remembering promises made long ago.
That our love was forever and we'd never let go.
Still here we are, our love we deny
And we worry that truth will reflect in our eyes.
Though love is a beautiful, passionate thing,
Merciless heartbreak and pain with it brings.
For the break of the curse lies in using truth's knife
The heart of another must first be sacrificed.
And no matter the choice or the path that we take
First we must decide, which heart we will break.
How does someone choose, when the last chance they see,
Means they must shed the blood of a heart to be free?
What is right? What is wrong? Which choice is the worst,
Betray trust with a truth, or live lies with a curse?
